Superfood Highlight: Healthy Fats

Happy Monday, my natural beauties! True beauty comes from within, & by now, you know that nutrition plays a big part in its process. A big part of our ethos at de la heart is finding our inner radiance with the help of nature. To me, this means eating a plant-based, nutrient-dense diet that will not only keep you looking beautiful but will also keep your system running at its best!
In the last few years, the conversation around incorporating more healthy fats into our diets has progressed. Health-conscious people like you & I are now adding more plant-based fats to their meals. Fats do not only do wonders for our skin, but they serve as brain fuel, keeping our minds sharp & ready for the day. In Dr. Will Cole's book, Ketotarianhe gives an in-depth look at the kinds of fats you want to be cooking with versus those you should be consuming. Very different things!
Below is a list of my favorite fats to cook with:
  • Avocado Oil - is excellent for frying because of its high smoke point. You can also use this oil in any recipe (salty or sweet) because of its flavorless nature! Unsaturated fats like this one are not only great for cooking but also highly beneficial when consumed. Avocado oil is rich in Vitamin E & great for heart health.
  • Coconut Oil - Like many people, coconut oil was the first kind of plant-based fat I incorporated into my diet. This oil also has a high smoke point & I cook with it very often at my house. It is high in saturated fat, making it better to cook it than to consume it straight from the jar. This fat is high in antioxidants & high in lauric acid, giving it antimicrobial properties when digested.
  • Flax Oil - is an oil rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids & is also famous for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its flavorless profile makes it an easy superfood to add to any meal. Boost your morning smoothies with a tablespoon of this liquid gold to turn that brain on & keep that body going!
  • Ghee - This is the only type of butter that I consume. It is clarified butter, meaning that there is no lactose in it, and is also a great source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Ghee is full of vitamins & tastes terrific in any dish. Because of its high-fat content, it makes it a great superfood to consume for optimal brain health.

Fat can be highly beneficial & a fantastic addition to your daily meals if you incorporate it correctly. What are your favorite healthy fats to cook & consume? Tag us at @delaheart #selfloveclub for a chance to be featured on our Instagram!
